Lake Braddock Middle School OrchestrasCommon Questions for Rising 7th Graders:

1. How many middle school orchestras exist at Lake Braddock?
There are five different orchestra classes at Lake Braddock.
Beginning Orchestra Period 3 (923710)
Concert (Intermediate) Orchestra Period 2 & 5 (923810)
String Ensemble Period 1 (925011)
Chamber Orchestra Period 7 (923911)

2. Do I have to audition?
If you wish to be placed in an advanced ensemble you must audition.
Auditions will be held April 26,27,29,30 & May 3 from 2:30 pm until 5 pm. Email Ms Holmes at SEHolmes@fcps.edu to secure you audition time and date.

3. What class should I sign up for?
Sign up for Concert Orchestra (923810) and if your audition shows that you need to be placed in a different class, Ms. Holmes will do that for you.

4. What should I play at my audition?
You should play any piece of music that shows your talent the best.
The piece should be no longer than two minutes in length.
Also be prepared to play scales & sight-read.

5. I have never played a scale before what should I do?
That is ok!!! Many 7th graders do not know scales. At least learn the D major scale. If you wish to be in the chamber orchestra you should be familiar with all scales up
to 3 sharps & 3 flats.

Middle School Orchestra Auditions School Year 2010-2011

WHO: All current orchestra members will need to audition for placement in an ensemble for the 2010-2011 school year.

WHEN: Monday, May 3
Tuesday, May 4
Wednesday, May 5
Thursday, May 6
Friday, May 7

WHERE: Orchestra Room

TIME: 2:15 until 5:00pm

WHAT TO PREPARE: Solo piece that demonstrates your ability and
2-octave scales up to 3 sharps and 3 flats;
There will also be a sight-reading piece. If you wish to be in chamber or symphony you should know 3 octave scales

DETAILS: - Audition sign-ups will be in 5-minute increments
- Auditions will be blind
- These auditions will determine placement in an orchestra for the following school year.
- you must arrive 30 min before your audition time.
- Your audition will count as a performance grade for 4th quarter

Current 7th graders will be auditioning for the following orchestras:
MS Concert Orchestra (Period 2 or Period 5)
MS String Ensemble (Period 1)
MS Chamber Orchestra (Period 7)

Current 8th graders will be auditioning for the following orchestras:
HS Concert Orchestra (Period 6)
HS String Ensemble (Period 3)
HS Symphony (Period 4)

High School Orchestra Auditions 2010-2011 School Year

WHO: All current orchestra members will need to audition for placement in an ensemble for the 2010-2011 school year.

WHEN: Monday, April 26
Tuesday, April 27
Thursday, April 29
Friday, April 30

WHERE: Orchestra Room

TIME: 2:30 until 5:30pm

WHAT TO PREPARE: Solo piece that demonstrates your ability and
3-octave scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats;
There will also be a sight-reading piece.

DETAILS: - Audition sign-ups will be in 5-minute increments,
arrive 30 min before your audition time
- Auditions will be blind
- These auditions will determine placement in an orchestra for the following school year.
- all students will need to stay after school to audition on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.
- Your audition will count as a performance grade for 4th quarter

Current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will be auditioning for the following orchestras:
HS Concert Orchestra (Period 6)
HS String Ensemble (Period 3)
HS Symphony (Period 4)
